Memorise the short surahs — the first step in the hifz journey
The short surahs of juz' 'Amma are the natural starting point for memorisation. They are short enough to memorise in one or two sessions, they appear daily in salah, and they contain the entire emotional range of the Qur'an — from the warning of al-Humazah to the calm of al-Kawthar. The Prophet ﷺ said, "The example of the one who memorises the Qur'an is like the example of an owner of a tied camel. If he attends to it, he will keep it; and if he lets it loose, it will go away" (Sahih al-Bukhari 5031). This course teaches both the memorisation and the daily revision system that keeps the camel tied.
Who the short surahs course is for
- Children aged 6–12 starting hifz for the first time.
- Adults who want to memorise enough surahs to vary their salah.
- New Muslims building their first practical Quran library inside their heart.
- Heritage students who memorised parts of juz' 'Amma years ago and want to restore them.
The structured plan — juz' 'Amma in six months
- Months 1–2: the last 10 surahs (an-Nas through al-Fil), one surah every 3–5 lessons.
- Month 3: al-Humazah, al-'Asr, at-Takathur, al-Qari'ah, al-'Adiyat, az-Zalzalah.
- Month 4: al-Bayyinah, al-Qadr, al-'Alaq, at-Tin, al-Inshirah, ad-Duha.
- Month 5: al-Layl, ash-Shams, al-Balad, al-Fajr, al-Ghashiyah.
- Month 6: al-A'la, at-Tariq, al-Buruj, al-Inshiqaq, al-Mutaffifin (and the closing review of the whole juz').
Each surah follows the same routine: the teacher recites the verses with tajweed, the student repeats line by line, then memorises a small chunk before the next lesson. Every Friday session is reserved entirely for review of the previous week's surahs.
The revision system — the missing half of most hifz programs
Memorising a surah once is easy; keeping it after six months is hard. Our students follow a three-cycle revision plan: the daily cycle (today's surah plus yesterday's), the weekly cycle (the surah from one week ago), and the monthly cycle (one full review of the entire juz' on the last Friday of every month). Without this system, hifz fades within a year. With it, the juz' becomes part of the student's salah for life.
What comes after the short surahs?
Most students continue to the One Juz' track, then to the Hafez Program for full Quran memorisation. Students focused on tajweed first can branch into Intermediate Tajweed and return to memorisation later.
Frequently asked questions
How long until my child memorises juz' 'Amma?
With two 30-minute lessons per week and 10 minutes of daily practice at home, most children aged 8+ finish juz' 'Amma in six to nine months. Younger children typically take 9–12 months.
I am an adult. Will I be able to keep up?
Yes — adult memorisation is slower per surah but more consistent. The same six-month plan usually finishes in eight to ten months for adults, with stronger long-term retention.
Do you offer female teachers for sisters and girls?
Yes. All female students can request a female Al-Azhar trained teacher when booking.
What if we miss a week (illness, travel)?
The plan absorbs one missed week per month without falling behind, because the Friday review session doubles as a catch-up. Book a free trial and we'll build the plan around your real calendar.
